The 2026 edition of The State of the World’s Forests (SOFO 2026) will be launched on 28 September at the 28th Session of the Committee on Forestry, held at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy.
The focus of this edition of the FAO flagship report will be on forest and landscape restoration as a key solution for climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, land degradation neutrality, and the resilience of sustainable and productive agrifood systems.
The report demonstrates how integrated restoration can reconcile ecological integrity with human well‑being and promote sustainable growth. It presents practical pathways for scaling restoration, highlights the rising cost of inaction and sets out how to translate global commitments into lasting impact.
Published every two years since 1995, SOFO complements the Global Forest Resources Assessment (FRA) and is a key reference for governments, policymakers, practitioners, academics, and civil society. The report guides the conservation and effective management of forest resources, contributing to healthy, sustainable and productive food systems.
